Founded in 2011 by Pat Sweeney, MD, Flow-FX is the culmination of his more than twenty years experience as a board certified orthopaedic surgeon, inventor, and entrepreneur.
Pat Sweeney, MD
After starting his professional life as a CPA, Dr. Sweeney received his medical training at the Royal college of Surgeons in Ireland and Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, and was a fellow at the University of Louisville’s Leatherman Spine fellowship.
In addition to being a practicing surgeon, Dr. Sweeney founded the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery in Mokena, Illinois in 2002, and holds more than 30 patents in the United States, Germany, France, and England, many of which form the basis for Flow-FX’s revolutionary technologies.
In addition to his successes in both healthcare and business, Dr. Sweeney has been blessed with a wonderful, supportive family including his wife of more than 30 years and their 3 children. His father, Howard J Sweeney, MD, was one of the first American surgeons to use and develop arthroscopic surgery techniques and was a founder of the Arthroscopy Association of North America as well as the Orthopaedic Learning Center.
The Flow-FX Vision
Built around Dr. Sweeney’s patents for methods and devices for delivering medicine to bone, Flow-FX introduced its products to the market in February 2016 and is poised to catalyze dramatic changes in orthopaedic surgery, with the ultimate goal of significantly improving patient outcomes.
Flow-Screw and Flow-Nail—both 510k cleared for fracture fixation as well as delivery of injectable bone void fillers—are the world’s first patented devices available with their purpose and precision. Under the continued guidance of Dr. Sweeney, Flow-FX is currently exploring research designs for delivering antibiotics in a similar manner, with plans to further expand surgical indications of the product line in the future.
The bottom line: Flow-FX is changing orthopedic surgery; and we’re only getting started.
